In 2013, following decades of slow decline and shrinking location count, ten company-owned, Wichita area Taco Tico locations were forced to close by the Kansas department of revenue due to their failure to remit sales tax revenue back to the state, leaving only a handful of franchised locations, including the two in Kentucky, open for business. If an ambiguity makes no difference, the rule itself is superfluous.” If there is any point to rules at all, they need to be unambiguous. In other words, we didn’t notice there was any ambiguity. I’ve found that it’s possible to beat him without taking a scratch - although it seems that the player is supposed to find the clever, non-combat way to beat him.”ĭave: “Jamie and I just assumed players would take it as read that they were to use base COMBAT when calculating Defence. Notably there’s an opponent in FL6, a giant called Big Boy, who is really dangerous in combat, and who inflicts permanent damage to the player’s Stamina with each hit. Paul: “If you use the wrong calculation for Defence, it’s possible for your character to become untouchable in combat. Which also makes calculating Defence straightforward, as it doesn’t change every time you switch weapon.” So to be clear: weapon bonuses do not count towards Defence, ie when calculating your Defence you use your native COMBAT skill without weapon bonuses. We should have made it clearer in the rules that you’re supposed to use your innate COMBAT score when calculating Defence.”ĭave Morris:“Also, if the rule worked that way, then logically magic weapons should cost twice as much as magic armour, because they would count for Defence, just like the armour does, and for attack too.” Jamie: “If weapon bonuses counted then players could too easily become unbeatable. Given the new mechanic for spirit combat, in which Defence is calculated a little differently, it’s important to be specific as regards weapon bonuses.” And with the release of book 7 we’ve got the opportunity to nail this point down. Jamie Thomson: “The question a lot of people ask is whether that COMBAT score includes weapon bonuses – that is, does your Defence score factor in bonuses from weapons and armour, or just from armour?” Plus the bonus for the armour you’re wearing (if any)’.” To quote the books: ‘Your Defence score is equal to: Paul Gresty: “The precise calculation for Defence in Fabled Lands came up on the FL Facebook page about a month ago, and it’s come up again during playtesting of The Serpent King’s Domain as a point of ambiguity. And that’s what I mean, in that you now have some easier, quick entry points on your way to some of Ardour’s deeper and more powerful functionality. They’re persistent and work across views. Related to workflow, Ardour 8 also adds quick mixer groups, atop track and bus groups and VCAs. That’s a huge feature to me, especially as what you may want from something like Ardour is the ability to take materials generated elsewhere and get them in order. There are three-point edits with start/range and destination. Now, on to what’s new: Arrangement features and groupingĪrdour 8 adds a dedicated arrangement ruler – define sections, and then copy and reorder. (Though that’s also a great piece of software. But yeah, this is free as in freely licensed and open source, and truly free on Linux, not free as in you just keep clicking past the nag screen in Reaper. Paying is a good idea anyway if you can afford it, as it supports development. That can get tricky with dependencies, so Ardour charges a very small fee for those binaries on Mac and Windows. (Linux means choice, of course, but if you’re looking for a beginner-friendly way to start for music and creation, it’s hard to beat.) It’s also free if you build your own DAW. An easy way to do that is via Ubuntu Studio. One quick note for those of you new to Ardour – if you run on Linux, the whole DAW is free. That’s welcome because, cool as it is to have a free DAW that does stuff other DAWs can’t, this makes trying it a lot gentler if you’ve had a background from other tools. Some are unique to Ardour, and some help add features you may know from other DAWs – meaning that thanks to a lot of feedback, the current Ardour is likely to be more comfortable than any previous version. On top of some significant improvements in the 7.x sequence, this release adds some major new features. These features also migrate to the excellent Harrison Audio Mixbus, which bundles all the Ardour goodness with some specific fit and finish and Harrison’s beautiful consoles in one of the most underrated bargains in sound.Īrdour 8.0 landed yesterday. When you sit in a chair, you are exerting force down upon the chair, but the chair is exerting equal force to keep you upright. His third law of action and reaction creates a simple symmetry to the understanding of the world around us: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Newton’s law also explains why larger or heavier objects require more force to move or alter them, and why hitting a small object with a baseball bat would produce more damage than hitting a large object with that same bat. In his equation that force equals mass times acceleration, or F=ma, your pedaling of a bicycle creates the force necessary to accelerate. You can see an example of his second law of acceleration when you ride a bicycle. It also explains why an object thrown in space is likely to continue at the same speed on the same path for infinity unless it comes into another object that exerts force to slow it down or change direction. So, with this law, Newton helps us explain why a car will stop when it hits a wall, but the human bodies within the car will keep moving at the same, constant speed they had been until the bodies hit an external force, like a dashboard or airbag. The law of inertia states that at rest or in motion will remain at rest or in motion unless it’s acted upon by an external force. It was in this work that he first laid out his three laws of motion. In 1687, Newton published one of the most important scientific books in history, the Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, commonly known as the Principa. Sir Isaac's Newton's 'Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.' Photo: SSPL/Getty Images Newton’s laws of motion laid the groundwork for classical mechanics But when Newton refracted these same colors back onto another prism, they formed into a white light, proving that white light (and sunlight) was actually a combination of all the colors of the rainbow. Scientists already knew many of these colors existed, but they believed that the prism itself transformed white light into these colors. Working in his darkened room, he directed white light through a crystal prism on a wall, which separated into the seven colors we now know as the color spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). He performed a seemingly endless series of experiments to prove his theories. Some even believed that the colors of the rainbow were formed by rainwater that colored the sky’s rays. He began working on his studies of light and color even before creating the reflecting telescope, although he presented much of his evidence several years later, in his 1704 book, Opticks.īefore Newton, scientists primarily adhered to ancient theories on color, including those of Aristotle, who believed that all colors came from lightness (white) and darkness (black). The next time you look up at a rainbow in the sky, you can thank Newton for helping us first understand and identify its seven colors. Newton helped develop spectral analysisĪ drawing of Sir Isaac Newton dispersing light with a glass prism. Newton’s simple telescope design is still used today, by both backyard astronomers and NASA scientists. In fact, his first model, which he built in 1668 and donated to England’s Royal Society, was just six inches long (some 10 times smaller than other telescopes of the era), but could magnify objects by 40x. Newton’s new “reflecting telescope” was more powerful than previous versions, and because he used the small mirror to bounce the image to the eye, he could build a much smaller, more practical telescope. He replaced the refracting lenses with mirrored ones, including a large, concave mirror to show the primary image and a smaller, flat, reflecting one, to display that image to the eye. This caused “chromatic aberrations,” or fuzzy, out-of-focus areas around objects being viewed through the telescope.Īfter much tinkering and testing, including grinding his own lenses, Newton found a solution. Known as refracting telescopes, they used glass lenses that changed the direction of different colors at different angles. Photo: Getty Imagesīefore Newton, standard telescopes provided magnification, but with drawbacks. |
